What is prolotherapy? Prolotherapy is an injection technique used to treat chronic, musculoskeletal pain. It works by stimulating the body's own healing process to repair injured or weakened tissues. New tissue is formed resulting in strengthening of the effected area.
What is contained in the injections? The procedure involves the injection of a dextrose solution and an anesthetic such as lidocaine. Sometimes the doctor will add vitamin B12, glucosamine or a homeopathic medicine to further promote healing. Dr. Gordon will tailor the injection substance according to the patients needs.
How do the injections work? The solution causes a localized inflammatory response at the injection site. Your body responds to this by mounting it's natural repair process. Growth factors are stimulated which cause new ligament / tendon growth.
How many injections are needed? Typically, 3 - 6. Sessions are spaced 2 - 6 weeks apart.
How painful are the injections? Prolotherapy can be a painful procedure, but most people find that the discomfort of the injection is totally bearable. The discomfort passes rapidly. Pain from the inflammatory response can be reduced with Tylenol.
What are the side effects? Some temporary bruising and a feeling of stiffness / soreness around the injection site are common.
